"This was a commissioned drawing done this summer. Margaret and her husband sponsored one of the yew trees in St. Mary’s churchyard in Painswick to help pay for the upkeep of the yew trees. In the summer of 2024, Margaret approached me to do a drawing of their tree as she had lost her husband and wanted to honor and remember her husband by having a drawing done. I was honored by her request and decided to do a mixed media plein air color drawing for her. I wanted the drawing to be expressive and full of color." — Greg Thatcher

"This is another 2024 commissioned picture. The drawing is of a damaged Yew Tree from Saint Mary’s churchyard in Painswick. This tree was part of four yew trees that had grown together to form a gorgeous beautiful stand of trees. Over the years of heavy rains and strong winds the fourth tree fell over onto a chest tomb that saved the tree from completely uprooting itself. The church decided to leave the root intact and let the tree regenerate using the tomb as a support. The drawing documents the growth and how the tome and tree support each other.

This is the second drawing that I have done of this survivor tree, one of my favorite trees in the churchyard." — Greg Thatcher

"This piece is an experiment with metal leaf and Cad. Yellow. First, I started with the gold leaf on the background. I found that the gold was too much of a contrast, and then applied Cad. Yellow to soften the reflective quality of the gold leaf. Once the reflective background gold was reduced, the yellow harmonized the picture." — Greg Thatcher

"This plein air drawing was completed over five summers. In this pencil drawing I moved my perspective deep underneath the mantle of two yew trees. This provided a new expanded view of the inner architecture of the trees. I focused on the complicated relationship of the boughs and how they create a rhythmic movement and dynamic space." — Greg Thatcher
